A coastal Dist that developed along with the mining industry, is located in northern New Taipei City. Mining was an important industry in Rueifang in the early 20th century. Gold was mined in Jioufen and Jinguashih, while coal was mined in Houtong. After the mining sources dried up, the Dist reverted to relative obscurity until the release of a series of movies and advertisements highlighting Jioufen, Junguashih and Houtong. Today, these towns attract visitors due to their historic charm, the tranquility of mountains, and spectacular sweeping views of the sea.
