Though the sweet taro tapioca ball was not invented in Jiufen, it has become one of the most famous local specialty snacks; and Grandma Lai's Sweet Taro Balls is one of the great stores selling sweet taro tapioca balls in Jiufen.

Located in the middle of Jishan Old Street, the sweet taro tapioca balls sold by Grandma Lai's Sweet Taro Balls are handmade on the site. After peeling the fresh taro from Dajia, it is heated in hot water before steaming until it is well done. Then, a suitable amount of sweet potato starch or potato starch is added to the mashed taro and mixed with a suitable amount of water to ensure the aroma of taro is at its optimal status. Later on, it is rolled into bars and diced. After cooking, they become the chewy, elastic and smooth sweet taro tapioca balls.

There were not many flavors in the beginning, mainly taro and sweet potato. Today, there are Chinese yam, green tea and sesame flavors. When colorful sweet taro tapioca balls are placed in the bowl, they look good and taste good. The house also provides tasting service in front of the store, suggesting that Grandma Lai's store is fully confident in their sweet taro tapioca balls.
As the business grows well and fast, Grandma Lai's Sweet Taro Balls has expanded the store to next door, in order to provide customers with a better dining environment. Inside the store, the decoration has a strong traditional and ancient concept. The walls are stacked with stones. On one of the walls a picture is hung. After consulting the keepers, the old lady in the picture is Grandma Lai. It has been three generations now since the store was opened. The picture is hung there to express the family's gratitude for what Grandma Lai has done for them. In Jiufen, Grandma Lai's Sweet Taro Balls has been standing in the old street for more than three decades, and is the best witness of the rise and fall of Jiufen.
